Job Description
As the Lead Gameplay Engineer, you will craft the game-systems that give our title life. A hybrid role of engineering & design, you will work in both code & content to get the job done. Daily interaction with other disciplines is par-for-the-course, and it is your responsibility to build flexible systems & tools which will multiply the capabilities of the whole studio. Your technologies unlock all Raid Base staff in building engaging gameplay content to make our designs a reality.
Key Responsibilities
Define the project’s long term technical plan.
Provide (to product & design) different technical approaches and tradeoffs which are available.
Assertively speak your mind, and regularly define outcomes which fold up into project plans.
Help set technical standards for the gameplay domain.
Implement strategically important systems for the project.
Author foundational game-systems on which we layer all of our design & content.
Create systems that are flexible by nature, and can be pivoted based on iteration and playtesting.
Strike the right balance between “work fast” and “shippable”, layering on functionality as we go.
Apply pragmatism to how we work.
Ensure that the team operates with maximum efficiency—know when something is “good enough,” and when it is time to move on.
Align to player affinity, craft experiences with the audience in mind.
Hold the team accountable for schedule and delivery of milestone progress.
Build a high-functioning team.
Build and scale the gameplay team into one that is healthy, highly functional, and strongly aligned with the studio’s culture.
Hold a high bar for performance; across all individuals, of all disciplines on the team.
Manage tension—do not let misalignments, issues, or concerns fester or go unaddressed.
Required Qualifications
Previous professional game development experience.
Recent experience as a technical lead of other engineers.
Autonomy in how you work; given outcomes, can you define the outputs?
Demonstrable examples of working on a cross-discipline team.
An intuition and empathy for the player experience.
Desired Qualifications
Familiarity with Unreal Engine.
Active gamer, who keeps a regular pulse on player sentiment.
